Hockey West Island [HWI] is excited to launch the first edition of its Spring 5-on-5 hockey session.
Join us for a fun and fast-paced, 9-week recreational program designed to allow players to play for the love of the game and with their friends, regardless of the level that they play during the regular season.

General Information:

Some of the finer details will be determined by the number of registrations in each age level, but this is the current plan:

  • Open to players currently registered with HWI in the U9 to U18 divisions.
  • 9 sessions running end of March to late May.
(1 session of 60 minutes, plus 8 sessions of 90 minutes).
  • Players will each receive 13 hours on the ice (one game per week).
  • There are no practices and no weeknight games.
  • Non-contact for all divisions.
  • Full ice games with referees and a scorekeeper.
  • Penalty shots will replace all minor penalties.
  • There will be no overtime. Games may end in a tie.
  • In order to ensure that players received equal ice time, a buzzer will sound every 90 seconds indicating a line change.
  • Parent coaches (certified by Hockey Canada and registered with HWI).
Parent coaches will supervise the benches during games but minimal coaching will occur in order to encourage player creativity, cooperation, and leadership.
  • This is a FUN league without standings or playoffs.

The Spring Hockey Session runs from Saturday March 29, 2025 to Saturday May 24, 2025 and all sessions will take place at Westwood Arena in Dorval.

OPEN ONLY TO PLAYERS CURRENTLY REGISTERED AND PLAYING WITH HWI, AND TO GRIZZLIES PLAYERS WHO LIVE IN POINTE-CLAIRE OR DORVAL.
Players will be divided into lines based on their
current playing level (A, B, C or double letters) and will play against lines of approximately the same level – depending of course on who registers. (ie: U11 C-level players will not be playing on lines against U11 AA-level players). In some instances, exceptions may be made and a player may move up or down an age group to play with similar level players, or because groups are combined due to enrollment numbers.

Schedule:

The times may rotate, depending on registrations, but will be on these dates within the times mentioned.

  • The first session on Saturday, March 29th will be 60 minutes long, within the hours of 12pm to 4pm.
  • The following sessions will be on Saturdays, from April 5 to May 24. 90-minute sessions within the hours of 2:30pm to 8:30pm. (Younger will generally be earlier).
Cost:

$120 for 9 sessions, for a total of 13 hours.

Registration must be completed through the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) and payment is by credit card only. The fee is the same for players and goalies. Regular registered players will not be refunded for missed games.

Players may register as “Spares” and will be able to play should a regular player be absent. Spares will be asked to pay $10 per game played. Payable by etransfer to HWI.

Full equipment required

In order to keep costs low, HWI will not be printing dedicated “Spring hockey” jerseys. We ask that all players bring a white jersey and a black/navy jersey to each session. We encourage the wearing of the older generation retired HWI game jerseys for those who own a set. HWI will offer each player a retired HWI game jersey that will be theirs to keep, although we have limited stock in some sizes.

Players will be divided into teams by HWI once registration closes. HWI will accept up to two friend requests and will do our best to put players together.

All players must be registered by March 1st, 2025. In the event that there are not enough players in a division, players will be contacted and their registration fee of $120 will be fully reimbursed, or they will be offered the chance to play in a different division.

Non-contact:

Non-contact for the HWI Spring 5-on-5 hockey session is defined as:

  • No body-checking
  • No reckless pursuit of the puck without consideration of possible incidental contact
  • No aggressive pinning/cutting off
  • No contact into/against the boards

BODY-CONTACT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE WHETHER INTENTIONAL OR RECKLESSLY NON-INTENTIONAL – PLAYER SAFETY WILL BE PARAMOUNT AT ALL TIMES

Any suspensions will be issued at the discretion of the Hockey West Island Executives.

Registration is NOT open to players from other associations.

OPEN ONLY TO PLAYERS CURRENTLY REGISTERED AND PLAYING WITH HWI, AND TO GRIZZLIES PLAYERS WHO LIVE IN POINTE-CLAIRE OR DORVAL.

Under no circumstances can a player who is not registered with HWI and registered for the HWI Spring 5-on-5 hockey session play in any game or be on the ice with the HWI teams. Failure to abide by this rule will result in a suspension of the player for the following season and suspension of the team coach.
